これはなんですか？
前回（ぜんかい）は「これは～です」 と 「これは～ですか？」について学習しました。今回学習するのは「これはなんですか？」（What is this?)です。
Previously we learned “this is ~.” and “Is this ~?” in Japanese. This time we learn “What is this?”.

英語とちがって日本語では「これは」で聞かれたら「これは」で答えます。「あれは」で聞かれたら「あれは」で答えます。つまり同じ代名詞を使って答えます。
In English we answer the question using “it is ~” like “What is this?” “It is~”. But in Japanese we use the same pronoun with the question. “これはなんですか？” “これは～”. “あれはなんですか？” “あれは～”.

B: ケンとマイちゃんがいくよ。私はいかない。
ken to mai chan ga ikuyo. watashi wa ikanai.
Ken and Mai chan come. I don’t.
A: あなたはどこにすんでいますか？
anata wa doko ni sunde imasuka?
Where do you live?
B: 早稲田（わせだ）です。
Waseda desu.
(I live in) Waseda.
A: なぜ赤色をえらんだのですか？
naze akairo wo erandanodesuka?
Why did you choose “red”?
B: セクシーに見えるでしょ？
sekushii ni mieru desho?
because, I look sexy, right?
A: その魚はどれくらい大きいですか？
sono sakana wa dorekurai ookiidesuka?
How big is the fish?
B: ２メートルくらいあるよ！
ni meetoru kurai aruyo!
It’s around 2 meter!
